University of Glasgow to host Association for Social Economics World Congress

Issued: Mon, 11 Jun 2012 17:29:00 BST

The University of Glasgow will host the 14th World Congress of the Association for Social Economics (ASE) from 20-22 June 2012, with the Adam Smith Business School supporting one of the plenary addresses.

The theme of the conference is: Towards an Ethical Economy and Economics. The keynote speakers are: Prof Tony Atkinson (University of Oxford) who will lecture on Inequality and Economic Crises, and Prof Ben Fine (School of Oriental and African Studies, SOAS, University of London) who will deliver the Cairncross Lecture (supported by the Adam Smith Business School) on Economics: Unfit for Purpose.

Social economics, with its focus on social values, social interactions, and ethics, is particularly well suited to provide insightful analyses on the present state of economics as a discipline and on the state of the world economy.  The international financial crisis, the European sovereign debt crisis, and increasing inequalities throughout the world raise important social and ethical issues concerning the interactions of governments, financial institutions, individuals, communities, and the economics profession. Social economics offers valuable alternative evaluations of economic activity that lead toward a more ethical and sustainable economy and a more relevant economics.

The conference will take place on the campus of the University of Glasgow. All daytime sessions will be in the St. Andrews Building, 11 Eldon Street. Lunch will be provided. The opening plenary session and reception will be held at Òran Mór Restaurant in the heart of Glasgow’s fashionable West End. The conference dinner will be held at Chardon d’Or at 176 West Regent Street in the City Centre.
