Welcome to the 10th issue of Aspire, the University of Glasgow Business School magazine.

With unprecedented student numbers, the 2011/12 academic year has gotten off to a tremendous start for the Business School. In addition to this growth, a number of new staff appointments are in the pipeline. Several new members of staff already join us in the subjects of Accounting and Finance, Economics and Management, who I am confident will make a valued and significant contribution to the continuing development of the School.

Looking ahead, we plan to work closely with our new Strategic Advisory Board, with members from highly successful UK companies and government organisations such as Glasgow City Council, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, Citi Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, BAA and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

We plan to build on the success we have enjoyed in student rankings such as the National Student Survey, the International Student Barometer and the Guardian’s University Guide. Moving forward, we plan to use these results and the feedback we have received to create a stronger School, and an even better environment in which students can learn and develop, and become the leaders of tomorrow.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Aspire, with contributions from academic members of staff within the Business School, as well as our honoured guests: Frances Cairncross, Rector of Exeter College Oxford; Kate Armstrong, founding CEO of Confused.com; and Patrick Verwijmeren, Associate Professor at VU University, Amsterdam.

We are looking forward to sharing the next year of challenges and developments with you.

Professor Farhad Noorbakhsh
