The Merchants House Travelling Scholarship

Information: The Merchants House of Glasgow offers a bursary annually to an undergraduate student of the University of Glasgow who has completed the second or any subsequent year of study, or to a graduate immediately following graduation, to enable that student or graduate intending to take up a commercial or industrial career to spend some time in a foreign country of the applicant's choice to enable him or her to obtain fluency in the language of that country.

Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant chosen by the University on merit, preference being given to applicants of Scottish parentage. The scholarship is not intended to be used to fulfil a component of a student’s undergraduate course, as for example a medical elective, a SOCRATES or similar exchange or residence abroad in the case of language students.

Value: The bursary will be a sum not less than £750 nor more than £1,000 at the discretion of the Merchants House.

Stevenson Exchange Scholarships (students from Scottish universities)

Information: Founded in 1932 and 1935 by Sir Daniel Stevenson, Bt.LLD, Chancellor of the University for the promotion of friendly relations between the students of Scotland, Germany, France and Spain. Scholars are required to pay their own travel expenses. A limited amount of scholarships may be awarded for periods of not less than four months.

Value: Award level can vary subject to interview performance.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduates and postgraduates of any Faculty at any Scottish University where French, Spanish and German is studied and tenable at any French, Spanish or German University. Students must be no older than 25. However, in special cases applications may be considered from candidates up to the age of 35. The scholarships may be held with assistantships and other awards at the discretion of the committee.

Stevenson Exchange Scholarships (students from France, Spain and Germany)

Information: Founded in 1932 and 1935 by Sir Daniel Stevenson, Bt.LLD, Chancellor of the University for the promotion of friendly relations between the students of Scotland, Germany, France and Spain. Scholars are required to pay their own travel expenses. A limited amount of scholarships may be awarded for periods of not less than four months.

Value: £200-£4,000.00. Award level can vary subject to application and proposals.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduates and postgraduates from France, Germany or Spain who intend to pursue further studies at any University in Scotland will normally be not more than 25 years of age.

Scottish - Italian Scholarship

Information: Founded in 1985 by the Comitato di Coordinamento delle Associazioni Italo-Scozzesi for the promotion of friendly relations between the students of Scotland and Italy.

Value: Award level can vary depending on interview performance.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduates of any Faculty at any Scottish University where Italian is studied and tenable at any Italian University. Candidates must not be more than 25 years of age. The scholarships may be held with assistantships and other awards at the discretion of the committee. In special cases candidates who have not yet matriculated may be considered.
