Australian Bicentennial Scholarships & Fellowships

Description: The Australian Bicentennial Scholarships and Fellowships are one-off awards of up to £4,000 to enable UK postgraduate students or academic staff to undertake research/study in Australia for a minimum of 3 months. These schemes are also open to Australian postgraduate students and academic staff wishing to come to the UK.

Value: up to £4,000.00 and may be used to supplement other awards.
Please note that preference is often given to applicants who can demonstrate that a Bicentennial grant will complete a guaranteed funding package for the whole degree or project.

Deadline: Applications will be accepted between 10 February and 5 April 2012. The deadline for receipt of applications and references is 5 April 2012.

Eligibility: Applicants for a scholarship must be registered as a post-graduate student at a British tertiary institution, or be eligible for such registration at an Australian tertiary institution, and be usually resident in the UK. He/she should normally have at least an upper second class honours degree.
Applicants for a Fellowship should have a good post-graduate degree or equivalent experience, and should be seeking to further his/her education or professional experience but not through taking a further degree.
Candidates may be in any discipline, but they must demonstrate that there are special scholarly or practical advantages to be gained from a period of study in Australia, and that an appropriate host institution is available.
Younger scholars are preferred, but there is no formal age limit.
A detailed report on the scholarship/fellowship is required within three months of the scholar’s/fellow’s return to the UK.
Monies will be released between 15 August 2012 and 31 July 2013. A scholar/fellow must take up the award by 31 July 2013 or forfeit it.

Commonwealth Scholarships – New Zealand

Description: Universities New Zealand has invited the CSC to nominate eight candidates for Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study in New Zealand starting in early 2013.
The following universities in New Zealand are offering to fund one Commonwealth Scholarship each at varying values:
Auckland University of Technology
Lincoln University
Massey University
University of Auckland
University of Canterbury
University of Otago
University of Waikato
Victoria University of Wellington

The terms and conditions for levels of funding offered by each university will be made available shortly. More information on eligible subjects and supervisors is available on individual university websites.
Please note that participation in this scholarship scheme is the choice of the university and that a university may withdraw at any time. The granting of a scholarship under this programme is at the discretion of the university.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be citizens of the United Kingdom (applicants with dual New Zealand/British nationality are ineligible)
  • Applicants must have at least an Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree (by the time of taking up an award)
  • Applications will be accepted for PhD study only
  • Applicants are expected to have thoroughly researched the research programmes and capabilities of their preferred universities in New Zealand and must demonstrate that they have made contact with and can show some degree of support from a potential doctoral supervisor. An indication that an applicant has received an offer of a place at their preferred New Zealand university would assist the assessment process, but is not mandatory.

How to apply:

Please read the Universities New Zealand rules and regulations before starting your application – these notes contain important information on the application process.
Each applicant must submit:
1 original application form and four copies (five in total). Please specify two preferred institutions of study on the form

  • 5 copies of a letter or email from your prospective supervisor in New Zealand offering support for your application
  • 5 certified copies of any undergraduate or postgraduate transcripts. (It is very important that these list the subjects passed and the grades of pass in each subject; academic records excluding such information cannot be assessed by the universities.) Those candidates who have yet to graduate should submit five copies of a letter from the university at which they are currently registered giving the details of their grades so far
  • 5 copies of a covering letter, no longer than two sides of A4, setting out why you should receive a Commonwealth Scholarship, taking note of the selection criteria outlined at the front of the application form and stating why you wish to study in New Zealand
  • 1 copy of a certified birth certificate, and, if necessary, other proof of UK citizenship attached to the original application

Reports from your three referees can be submitted direct to the CSC at the address below. The reports should be submitted on the supporting statement form, which should also include a summary of your plan of study. (This form is an interactive PDF which can be downloaded and completed.)

Daiwa Scholarships (Japan)

Description: The Daiwa Scholarship is a unique 19-month programme of language study, work placement and homestay in Japan, starting in mid-September and finishing at the end of March.
Daiwa Scholarships offer young and talented UK citizens with strong leadership potential, the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to access expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals. No previous experience of Japan or Japanese is necessary. Daiwa Scholarships are provided by the Foundation to encourage better understanding between both countries.

Value: The Foundation meets all tuition and examination fees associated with the Scholarship and the cost of economy-class travel to and from Japan at the beginning and end of the Scholarship. Daiwa Scholars receive a maintenance grant equivalent to £120,000 per annum for the duration of the Scholarship to cover accommodation and living costs. Scholars may not undertake remunerated work in Japan.
All Daiwa Scholars contribute to the compulsory Japanese Government Health Scheme from their maintenance. In addition, the Foundation provides standard medical insurance for Daiwa Scholars while they are in Japan on the programme.

Eligibility: Candidates for the Daiwa Scholarships must be:
- British citizens
- aged between 21 and 35 years of age by the time of departure.
- graduates or due to graduate by the time of departure
- equipped with a strong degree in any subject*or with a strong record of achievement in their field
- in possession of clear career objectives and a commitment to furthering UK-Japan links.
*Graduates in Japanese language studies are not eligible to apply for Daiwa Scholarships but may wish to apply for support through the Foundation’s grant schemes.

David Bates, Alwyn Ruddock & Institute of Historical Research Friends' Bursaries

Institute of Historical Research (IHR) Bursaries are available for doctoral students to help fund short research trips to archives in London, including the Institute of Historical Research. Students planning visits to London-based archives next year are invited to combine their trip with a visit to the IHR Library (http://www.history.ac.uk/library/intro) and apply for an award to help cover their costs.

The bursaries are intended for students who are not registered at London-based institutions and who do not live within Greater London. Applications will be accepted until 7 June 2010 and awards will be made for the academic year 2010-11. Decisions will normally be made by 30 September.

David Fleming-Brown Travel Scholarship

Description: The scholarship was established in August 2008 to support postgraduate research students to further develop their studies in North America.  Funding is available to cover students’ travel expenses to North America. The aim is to enhance students’ academic experience and to develop new research collaboration with North American institutions across all disciplines.

Value: The scholarship is up to £540, however the committee may award a single or several scholarships of lesser value. In exceptional circumstances the Committee may decide to increase the value of the award at their own discretion.   

Eligibility: This scholarship is open to all postgraduate research students from any academic discipline currently registered at the University of Glasgow. Placements should be in a North American institution and for the duration of at least 3 months. Applicant’s academic record and his or her proposal showing the potential development for opportunities to strengthen new research collaborations will be taken into account.

Candidates must be citizens of an EU or EEA country.

Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York Scholarship Fund

Administered in Scotland by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland

Description: For the 2013/14 academic year the Society will offer two scholarships of no less than $20,000 to enable Scottish graduates to study in the USA for a year. The chosen university must be within 250 miles of New York city or within the Washington D.C. area. In special circumstances the Society will allow the scholarship to be held at another university in the United States. Preference will be given to candidates who have no previous experience of the USA and for whom a period of study there can be expected to be a life changing experience. 

Value: $20,000

Eligibility: Candidates must be either Scottish by birth or descent and will be expected to have a good knowledge of Scottish current affairs. Candidates must also be either graduates of a Scottish university or of Oxbridge who have completed their first degree course no earlier than 2012 or students of a Scottish university or of Oxbridge who expect to complete their first degree in 2013.

Sir Godfrey Collins Travelling Scholarship

Information: The Scholarship is intended to defray in part the expenses of a period of travel and study abroad. 

Value: The Selection Committee may award a single Scholarship of up to £1400 or may award several Scholarships of lesser value.

Eligibility: It is open to graduates of the University of Glasgow of not more than three years' standing, preference being given to those who propose to follow a career in business or industry, in administration or in the arts.  Account will be taken of the applicant's academic record and the part which he or she has taken in the general life of the University.  Awards will be made on the basis of merit.

Winston Churchill Memorial Trust: Travelling Fellowships

Information: The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust invites applications for its travelling fellowships. These fund individual investigators' travel for research purposes abroad. Projects are welcomed in several areas involving the arts, crafts and music; citizen and civil society; education and training as well as an open category.

Value: around £5,500
