Chevening Scholarships
Information: The aim of the award is to bring to the UK present and future leaders and decision-makers. Awards are presented annually and candidates are selected overseas by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council. They are usually advertised locally in those countries where the awards are offered. For further details contact the British Council, British Embassy or British High Commission in your own country. Awards are usually made for:
- Postgraduate diplomas
- Masters programmes
which last up to one year.
Value: All or part of overall costs.
Eligibility: Most Scholarships are for one year Masters courses or equivalent. Shared funding scholarship arrangements with commercial companies, universities, trusts, foundations and other appropriate organisations are an important part of the programme. These scholarships are offered to more than 150 countries for students to study in the UK. The British Council on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office administers candidates for British Chevening Scholarships.

Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme
Information: Commonwealth Scholarships are available each year to fund Commonwealth citizens' study in the UK for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. A range of scholarships are available for citizens of Commonwealth countries other than the UK. Further information is available on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website.
How to apply: Application is made through the nominating agency (frequently the Education Ministry/Government Department or similar) of the applicant's home country. The nominating agency selects the best applications and forwards these to the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

Information: Students of excellent academic calibre from developing Commonwealth countries will be considered for a small number of Scholarships funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) in partnership with the University. Scholarships are awarded only for taught postgraduate courses which have a developmental emphasis. The University will nominate candidates from those who already hold offers in subjects related to the economic, scientific and social development of the their home nation.
Value: Fees at the Overseas Student rate, monthly stipend and return air fair from home country.
Eligibility: Applicants domiciled in approved developing British Commonwealth countries who have not previously studied in a developed country. A full list of eligible programmes of study will be published in due course. Anyone wishing to be considered must hold an Unconditional offer for an eligible programme.

How to Apply: There is no separate application necessary. Eligible candidates will be identified and considered automatically. Those who are shortlisted will be contacted and invited to submit a personal statement in which they outline the use to which they intend to put the skills they will obtain. Final nominations will be made on the basis of academic merit and the relevance of the programme to the development needs of the home nation.
Fulbright Commission
Information: Established in 1946, the Fulbright Scholarship program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills.
Approximately 20 Fulbright Scholarships are awarded each year to US graduates, regardless of age or subject, to study outside the USA.
These awards are made on a competitive basis and are for the academic year of nine months. However, students on a 12 month taught Masters degree may be eligible to receive a three month extension. Awards are available for lecturing or advanced research for a minimum of three months. Fellowships are offered for research librarians and academic administrators to spend three months gaining experience in the UK. Arts fellowships and professional fellowships are awarded to individuals in a variety of fields to enable them to spend a period of six to nine months in the UK. The Fulbright Commission promotes educational and cultural exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom in order to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen relations between the two countries. Fulbright makes awards through open competition to:
- outstanding graduates who demonstrate leadership qualities
- potential leaders of professional, academic and artistic excellence who are recognised in their field.
Value: The awards cover fares, tuition fees, maintenance, books and incidental expenses.
Eligibility: Awards are made US graduate students for pre-doctoral study in the UK. Minimum grade point average: 3.5. Priority will be given to those students who completed their first degree within the last five years. Students can follow a taught course, carry out doctoral research for a US PhD, or spend a year in independent study related to their career.

Stevenson Exchange Scholarships (for incoming students from France, Germany or Spain)

Information: A small number of Scholarships β normally two per year from each country β are available to students from France, Germany or Spain who intend to pursue further studies at any University in Scotland. These are open to current or recent students of a University in France, Germany or Spain, who will normally be not more than 25 years of age. The purpose of the Scholarships, founded in 1935 by Sir Daniel Stevenson, Bt.LLD, Chancellor of the University, is βTo provide facilities for the forming of friendly relationships between the students of the Universities of Scotland and the Universities of France, Germany and Spain, for the furthering of amity and good understanding and the training of an ever-growing body of educated man and women capable of disseminating wherever they go ideals of international goodwill and co-operation.β
Value: The awards are intended to be supplementary ones only. They are awarded entirely at the discretion of the Stevenson Executive Committee, and various factors are taken into account. Awards may range from £200 to £4,000.
