The Anglo-Spanish Society Scholarship Programme

Description: Founded in 1919 and re-established in 1958, the Anglo-Spanish Society, a UK registered charity, is a non-profit organisation managed by an elected Executive Council with the support of Trustees. Its objectives are to promote friendship and understanding between the peoples of Britain and Spain through the knowledge of each other’s customs, institutions, history and way of life.

The Society is proud to be able to provide a number of grants to support university students (undergraduate and postgraduates ), whose studies or research projects are related to the bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and Spain, in any area of academic interest

Value: Grants can include allowances for research materials, travel, academic fees and, where appropriate, accommodation. Each grant will be of the order of £3,000, with a likely maximum of £4,500 in special cases.

Eligibility: Applicants must be United Kingdom or Spanish nationals who have been accepted at the University of their choice and are either at their final year of undergraduate level or postgraduate level; or mature students seeking to extend their qualifications. Successful applicants will be asked to submit a short article on their research and experiences for publication in the Society’s Quarterly Review.

Deadline: Applications can be submitted at any time before the closing date 20th January 2010. It is intended that the five main scholarships (one for each Principal Supporter) will be awarded in April 2010 at a reception at the Spanish Embassy in London which successful candidates will be expected to attend.

How to Apply:  Applications - either direct or via an academic sponsor - should be made to the Grants Secretary of the Society info@anglospanishsociety.org and are to include:

  1. a covering letter - including a brief outline of the proposed course/project and
  2. an up-to-date CV, giving full academic and personal details, with particular reference to items 1, 3 and 5 of the Grants Policy.

Nuffield Science Bursaries - Undergraduate Research

Description: The Nuffield Foundation offers around 400 Undergraduate Research Bursaries each year, allowing students across the UK to experience first hand what it would be like to be a scientific researcher by taking part in a research project during their summer holidays.

Supervisors are invited to apply on behalf of a named student. Students and supervisors should develop the project and application together. Please read the guidance available on the Nuffield website.

Value: The bursary for 2009 was £180 per week (£190 in London)

Eligibility: To be eligible students must be:

  • taking an undergraduate science degree
  • considering research as a career
  • expecting to achieve a 1st or 2.1 degree
  • in the middle years of your degree
  • registered at a UK university for the majority of their degree

GU68 Engineers Trust

Description: The GU 1968 Engineers Trust was established by the 1968 Engineering Graduates of Glasgow University for the purposes of the advancement of education and, in particular, for the provision of benefit to or for students studying Engineering at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Value: The value of any Award is likely to be between £250 and £500.

Eligibility: Each year, the Trust invites written applications from, or on behalf of, candidates in any Engineering discipline for Awards to help to meet extraordinary costs associated with projects which can demonstrate a contribution to Engineering research or practice. The Trust can also consider applications to provide assistance to students with special financial needs.

Deadline: 31 January

Scottish - Italian Scholarship

Information: Founded in 1985 by the Comitato di Coordinamento delle Associazioni Italo-Scozzesi for the promotion of friendly relations between the students of Scotland and Italy.

Value: Award level can vary depending on interview performance.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduates of any Faculty at any Scottish University where Italian is studied and tenable at any Italian University. Candidates must not be more than 25 years of age. The scholarships may be held with assistantships and other awards at the discretion of the committee. In special cases candidates who have not yet matriculated may be considered.

Stevenson Exchange Scholarships

Information: Founded in 1932 and 1935 by Sir Daniel Stevenson, Bt.LLD, Chancellor of the University for the promotion of friendly relations between the students of Scotland, Germany, France and Spain. Scholars are required to pay their own travel expenses. A limited amount of scholarships may be awarded for periods of not less than four months.

Value: Award level can vary subject to interview performance.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduates and postgraduates of any Faculty at any Scottish University where French, Spanish and German is studied and tenable at any French, Spanish or German University. Students must be no older than 25. However, in special cases applications may be considered from candidates up to the age of 35. The scholarships may be held with assistantships and other awards at the discretion of the committee.

Undergraduate Talent Scholarships

Information: Description: The University of Glasgow is awarding 50 undergraduate Talent Scholarships in academic year 2010-2011 to support students who could face financial difficulties in taking up their place to study at the University.  The value of each scholarship is £1,000 p.a. for each year of the degree programme, subject to satisfactory progress. Talent Scholarships are available to students entering any of the University’s faculties. Dental School students are eligible for a talent scholarship in their first year of study only; they are eligible for the NHS Dental Bursary in the following years.

Value: £1,000 p.a. for each year of the degree programme, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for a Talent Scholarships if:

  • you have demonstrated excellent academic achievement before starting University
  • you live in the UK and are classified as a ‘Home’ student for fee purposes
  • you intend  to commence your first full-time undergraduate degree programme in September 2010
  • you or your family's circumstances are such that you may find it difficult to take up a place at the University for financial or other reasons.

How to Apply: While competition for Talent Scholarships is high, students who meet the eligibility criteria are strongly encouraged to apply.  The application form and guidance notes are available in pdf format at the links below.
