The Anglo-Spanish Society Scholarship Programme

Description: Founded in 1919 and re-established in 1958, the Anglo-Spanish Society, a UK registered charity, is a non-profit organisation managed by an elected Executive Council with the support of Trustees. Its objectives are to promote friendship and understanding between the peoples of Britain and Spain through the knowledge of each other’s customs, institutions, history and way of life.

The Society is proud to be able to provide a number of grants to support university students (undergraduate and postgraduates ), whose studies or research projects are related to the bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and Spain, in any area of academic interest

Value: Grants can include allowances for research materials, travel, academic fees and, where appropriate, accommodation. Each grant will be of the order of £3,000, with a likely maximum of £4,500 in special cases.

Eligibility: Applicants must be United Kingdom or Spanish nationals who have been accepted at the University of their choice and are either at their final year of undergraduate level or postgraduate level; or mature students seeking to extend their qualifications. Successful applicants will be asked to submit a short article on their research and experiences for publication in the Society’s Quarterly Review.

Deadline: Applications can be submitted at any time before the closing date 20th January 2010. It is intended that the five main scholarships (one for each Principal Supporter) will be awarded in April 2010 at a reception at the Spanish Embassy in London which successful candidates will be expected to attend.

How to Apply:  Applications - either direct or via an academic sponsor - should be made to the Grants Secretary of the Society info@anglospanishsociety.org and are to include:

  1. a covering letter - including a brief outline of the proposed course/project and
  2. an up-to-date CV, giving full academic and personal details, with particular reference to items 1, 3 and 5 of the Grants Policy.

Information: Career Development Loans are available through a partnership arrangement between the Employment Department and four banks: Barclays, the Clydesdale, the Co-Operative and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Loans are available for vocational courses lasting up to one year.

Carnegie Trust

Information: A member of staff of a Scottish university must nominate applicants. The Trust also administers a small number of Caledonian Research Foundation Scholarships under similar regulations. Nomination forms are available from the Carnegie Trust.

Eligibility: The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland awards a small number of research scholarships to graduates of Scottish Universities who achieve first-class Honours.

Glasgow Graduates' Scholarships

Description: As a University of Glasgow student you’re already improving your chances of getting a foot on the career ladder you want - most of our new graduates either start work or go onto further study within a year. By studying for a postgraduate taught degree you will expand your skills, knowledge and experience for your future career. Opportunities span part-time and full-time programmes, allowing you the opportunity to learn from our world-leading scholars.

Value: A reduction of 10% in the fee for postgraduate taught programmes.

Eligibility: Glasgow Graduates’ Scholarships are available to all Alumni (including Junior Year Abroad and Exchange Students) who wish to continue with Postgraduate studies. The scholarships are open to students who are fully self-funded and students can only be in receipt of one scholarship at a time. Part-time scholarships will be valid for the expected length of the programme. Excludes continuing professional development (CPD) courses.

GU68 Engineers Trust

Description: The GU 1968 Engineers Trust was established by the 1968 Engineering Graduates of Glasgow University for the purposes of the advancement of education and, in particular, for the provision of benefit to or for students studying Engineering at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Value: The value of any Award is likely to be between £250 and £500.

Eligibility: Each year, the Trust invites written applications from, or on behalf of, candidates in any Engineering discipline for Awards to help to meet extraordinary costs associated with projects which can demonstrate a contribution to Engineering research or practice. The Trust can also consider applications to provide assistance to students with special financial needs.

Henry Dryerre Scholarship

Description: The Royal Society of Edinburgh established a Scholarship in Medical or Veterinary Physiology, which is administered by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and it is offered in the 2010-2011 session.

Value: £14,800 for the academic year 2010-11

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a degree of a Scottish University with first-class honours or, if in their final year, to be expected to achieve first-class honours; they must also be a citizen of one of the countries of the European Union.  Tenure of a Henry Dryerre Scholarship must be at a Scottish Institution.

How to Apply: Applicants for the Scholarship must be nominated by a Professor, Reader or Lecturer in a Scottish University. Applications must be submitted through a member of staff on the appropriate form, copies of which can be obtained from the Carnegie Trust at the address below or downloaded from our website.

Renfrewshire Educational Trust

Description: The Renfrewshire Educational Trust was established in 1936 through the amalgamation of several specific endowment funds to provide assistance for educational purthose in financial need.  The Trust is administered by Renfrewshire Council.The Board of Governors has agreed to make an award of £3,000 in August 2010 to one student who is intending to undertake a one year full time Taught Masters Programme at a university within the United Kingdom.  It should be noted that the award must only be used as payment towards course fees and the award will be payable directly to the successful applicant’s university.

Value: £3000

Eligibility: To qualify for this award the following criteria must be met:

  • Applicants must be presently in the final year of an undergraduate degree programme, or, graduated in academic year 2008/2009 from one of the following institutions: University of Glasgow, West of Scotland, Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian; Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
  • Applicants must have lived in the East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde or Renfrewshire local authority areas for a minimum of 3 years in the last 10 years;
  • Applicants' total household income must not be in excess of £33,156 gross (NB: Up-to-date financial details will require to be submitted); 
  • Applicants must provide two references confirming academic achievement and character, also a personal statement on how an award would assist with their intended career path.

SAAS - The Postgraduate Students’ Allowance Scheme

Information: This scheme makes annual awards for nine months taught postgraduate diploma courses on largely vocational subjects e.g. information technology, divinity and engineering. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria above.

Value: Eligible students can apply for an award consisting of a means tested maintenance grant. Other means tested supplementary allowances are available including reimbursement of travel expenses over £80.00 and payment of tuition fees.

Eligibility: The SAAS provides funding for Scottish domiciled students studying full time postgraduate courses. This means that you will have to have been ordinarily resident in the British Isles for the three years immediately proceeding the academic year in which the course begins. If you are not a UK or EU national you must be settled in the UK as indicated by the Immigration Act of 1971. You must also be ordinarily resident in Scotland at the time of application. Responsibility for the Scottish Studentship Scheme has now been transferred to the AHRB. Previously this was administered by the SAAS.

SAAS - The Postgraduate Certificate of Education

Value: The award pays fees and provides maintenance funding in the form of an income contingent loan. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria above.

Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York Scholarship Fund

Description: For the academic year 2010-2011 the Society will offer Scholarships to the total value of $40,000 to enable Scottish graduates to study for a year in the United States. 

Value: Up to two Scholarships will be offered of not less than $20,000 each.

Eligibility: Candidates must be Scottish by birth or descent, and will be expected to have current knowledge of Scotland and the Scottish tradition. Candidates must also be: either graduates of a Scottish university or of Oxford or Cambridge who have completed their first degree course (so as to be qualified to graduate) not earlier than 2009 or students of a Scottish university or of Oxford or Cambridge who expect to complete their first degree course (so as to be qualified to graduate) in 2010. An Honours degree is not essential.
