Biography
I graduated with a 2:1 BSc Hons Degree in Biology from the University of Paisley in 1997, and have since acquired 22 years of experience in immunobiology research, firstly as a Senior Technician in a Canadian allergy and asthma research lab at McMaster University, studying respiratory inflammation, markers of allergic disease and the mechanisms of these diseases to help develop therapeutics.
In 2010, I relocated back to Scotland and for the past 12 years my tenure has been at the University of Glasgow working within the Immunobiology research group with four different investigators. I have worked on basic research, clinical trials and drug discovery themed projects, with a focus on musculoskeletal diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), tendinopathies and the role of miRNAs in auto-immune disease.
In 2014, I was appointed as part of a team working in collaboration with a well-known industry partner, working on various projects that were proposed by researchers to help further explore the mechanistic actions of some of the small compound libraries that are available as drug therapies and use bio-banked and clinical samples to study their effect. This utilised my skills in multi-parameter FACS acquisition, cell culture and transfection, qPCR, co-culturing of cells and multiplex protein detection assays.
From August 2018 until February 2023, I worked with Causeway Therapeutics, a small pharma spin-off company based at the University of Glasgow, on various projects related to the discovery and development of therapies to promote healthy ageing. During this time, I was also site lab coordinator for the BioFLARE study, a multi-centre clinical trial cohort that focused on identifying biomarkers of RA remission and flare, helping to inform and predict tailored disease therapies.
At present, I am a Research Associate working with Dr Aurelie Najm on the discovery and validation of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets in rheumatic disease and associated interstitial lung disease. In January 2023, I was awarded a Level 5 Chartered Management Institute qualification in Leadership and Management.
