Immunology and Inflammation

Immunology research within the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation incorporates interests ranging from the very basic scientific analysis of immune and inflammatory processes, through translational efforts, to more focused clinical studies. We believe that this combination of interests provides a seamless ‘pipeline’ allowing our research to progress efficiently from ‘bench to bedside’ and this is an important aspect of our research philosophy.

Immunology boasts specific basic research strengths in a number of key areas including cytokine and chemokine biology; immune cell signalling; advanced imaging technologies and cellular and gut immunology. Our translational efforts are focused on rheumatoid arthritis, dermatology, respiratory and CNS immune and inflammatory diseases. Research within immunology is generously funded by extensive project and programme grant funding from a wide variety of national and international funding agencies.

Our activities are supported by cutting-edge technologies which are provided as managed, and integrated, services. We have specific expertise in molecular biology, imaging, flow cytometry and cell sorting and tissue processing and staining. In addition, through our extensive local network of research-motivated clinical collaborators, we have access to a broad range of clinical samples which allows extremely efficient translation of our basic research interests into a range of pathological contexts.
