PhD Opportunities in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation

If you study with us, you will join a community of 26 postgraduate taught and 150 postgraduate research students. Our institute brings together world-leading basic, applied, clinical and translational researchers to study infection with a focus on the viral, parasitic and bacterial pathogens of both humans and animals, and immunology and inflammation with a focus on chronic inflammatory diseases.
Despite the continual development of new therapies, antibiotics and vaccines, chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases still pose persistent health threats.

We aim to:

• understand the basic science of the immune systems and how the immune system can in turn affect disease outcome
• understand the biology of parasites, viruses and bacteria and the interactions with their hosts, that in turn leads to high levels of infectious diseases worldwide
• develop therapies (drugs and vaccines) targeted on these processes
• explore new treatments and strategies in clinical and translational medicine

Our expertise is supported by state-of-the-art basic science technology, integrated seamlessly with translational clinical trial facilities. We also have numerous research links with disease
endemic countries, in particular in Africa, South America and India.

You will be taught by scientists and clinical investigators of global repute who possess the broad expertise necessary to assist you in achieving your goals. Our academics include geneticists, molecular and cell biologists, biochemists, immunologists, bacteriologists, virologists, parasitologists, pathologists and clinical investigators. PhD students can also benefit from a range of transferable skills, eg courses on scientific writing, oral presentations, IT skills, statistical analysis etc. Students are also required to provide annual reports, attend Institute poster days and give internal seminars. They will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of relevant seminars from internal and invited expert speakers as well as national and International conferences in their field of interest. The University of Glasgow is keen to encourage International students to apply for PhD studentships. The University was rated 1st in the UK for international student satisfaction, according to the International Student Barometer 2011. An International Student Support team is provided which will advise on non-academic and welfare matters such as immigration, employment, finance and any other concerns. An International Orientation Programme and International Student Handbook is available and events for students and students with families can be coordinated.

From a wide range of polls the University of Glasgow has scored highly in student satisfaction coming 20th in the UK and second overall in Scotland. The Sunday Times Good University Guide is drawn up from a broad range of criteria, taking into account student satisfaction, teaching and research quality, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student to staff ratios, graduate unemployment levels and university dropout rates. In the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS) Glasgow received a glowing 90 per cent satisfaction rating from the final year students, a result that put Glasgow joint top in Scotland and joint seventh overall in the UK. This year the University also achieved its best ever scores in the QS world University Rankings, soaring 18 places from 77th to 59th in the world. The QS league table looks at 600 institutions worldwide and assesses factors including reputation, graduate employability, research and student staff ratios. Glasgow’s good result, as one of only three Scottish universities in the top 100, reinforces our position as one of the world’s leading teaching and research institutions

A number of opportunities are available for funding to study within the Medical Research Council – University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, including the WB Martin PhD Studentship. See: www.glasgow.ac.uk/cvr/postgraduatetraining

A further route to PhD study within the Institute is via the Molecular Functions in Disease, Wellcome Trust four-year PhD programme. The funding package provides a generous stipend (currently over £19,000 per annum) plus research expenses. Full tuition fees are paid for all students. See: www.glasgow.ac.uk/biology/wellcometrust

Our excellent facilities underpin a bench to bedside approach that will equip you with training complementary to a range of career options, and you can tailor your study pathway to the
precise aspects of infection and immunology that suit your objectives. Through their research interests in drug development, vaccines and diagnostics, many of our project supervisors have strong links with industry. There is an open day to highlight career opportunities in industry related to our research
