Gordon T McInnes BSc (Hons), MD, FRCP FFPM FBPharmacolS is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Honorary Consultant Physician and Head of the Section of Clinical Pharmacology and Stroke Medicine, University Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, Western Infirmary, Glasgow. After graduation in Physiology and Medicine at University of Glasgow, Professor McInnes trained in General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at the Hammersmith Hospital London and the Western Infirmary Glasgow.
Professor McInnes is President of the British Hypertension Society and past Editor of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. He has been on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Hypertension, Journal of Human Hypertension and Blood Pressure. He was a member of the Working Parties which prepared the Joint British Recommendations on the Prevention of Coronary Disease in Clinical Practice, the 2003 European Society of Hypertension – European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for the Management of Arterial Hypertension and the British Hypertension Society Guidelines for Hypertension Management 2004 (BHS-4).
Current research interests are in the design and analysis of clinical trials, the delivery of care for hypertension and the role of drugs in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He has conducted many studies investigating the action of anti-hypertensive agents in healthy subjects and hypertensive patients, and has published widely on topics in clinical pharmacology and hypertension. Professor McInnes was the UK National Coordinator for the HOT study, was principle investigator at the largest UK centre in the LIFE study, is a member of the Steering Committee for ASCOT and of the Executive Committee for VALUE.
These activities have resulted in research income of about £5 million from international pharma and other sources.
