Congratulations to Lab Technician Elaine Butler who successfully finished The Great North Run last weekend in the impressive time of 2 hours 33 minutes. The race, considered one of the world’s largest half marathons, annually receives over 56,000 applicants and raises money for numerous charities. Elaine’s charity of choice was Epilepsy Research UK for whom she raised over £800 upon the successful completion of the 13.1 mile event. Elaine’s partner, Graeme Sills, is Chair for the Board of Trustees for the charity and also competed in the race himself, finishing in 1 hour 51 minutes.
Epilepsy Research UK ‘supports and promotes basic and clinical scientific research into the causes, treatments and prevention of epilepsy’ and are ‘the only national charity in the UK that is exclusively dedicated to funding independent research into the condition’ (eruk.org.uk), making Elaine’s achievement all the more significant. Elaine said that as the race started she found the combination of so many people and adverse weather conditions “quite overwhelming” but quickly settled in and found it “a great event to be part of”. After the race, there was no rest for the wicked as Elaine dutifully served cups of tea to fellow runners and spectators!
Elaine is still receiving donations in person for the next six weeks or via her sponsor site for the next month: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ElaineButler3
