Social and environmental research
Professor Richard Mitchell leads a programme of studies focused on exploring the positive and negative influences of social and physical environments on health.
Studies funded by the Forestry Commission and the Scottish Government, for example, examine relationships between access to green space and health and their policy implications. These epidemiological studies are complemented by new collaboration with the MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit on studies of the perceptions of green spaces.
Mitchell is also part of the NERC’s Environment and Human Health Programme. A collaboration with colleagues in Edinburgh, Southampton and Canterbury New Zealand, his project seeks to develop an index or classification of multiple physical environmental deprivation.
