Theme leader Professor Richard Mitchell

The social and environmental research theme studies the influences of society (including law), economy, work and environment on public health.

It aims to better understand the pathogenic (health damaging) and salutogenic (health promoting) mechanisms and behaviours which influence the distribution and experience of health and wellbeing.

Our research blends clinical, social and environmental science, stemming from the multiple disciplinary backgrounds of our staff. This mix of approaches and methods is particularly valuable in understanding the interface between society, economy environment and public health.

Research in the theme lies in three broad areas
