Professor McInnes is the director of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation in the University of Glasgow. He is a clinician scientist. His activities reside primarily in basic and translational research in the field of autoimmunity. In particular, he brings expertise in the role of cytokines in rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis pathogenesis. His work has defined the key biology of several innate response cytokines in rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, taking several molecules from basic laboratory discovery and characterization into clinical trials. Recent studies have extended these observations to unraveling the accelerated atherogenesis prevalent in rheumatoid and other autoimmune conditions. He maintains regular clinical input in inflammatory arthritis, providing tertiary referral for psoriatic arthritis patients in Scotland. He exhibits academic leadership nationally (serving on panels at the MRC, ARC and SSEM) and internationally as chairman of the EULAR Scientific Committee and recently in appointment as Chair-elect of the European Committee for Clinical Affairs in EULAR. His work has been recognized in the award of the Michael Mason Prize in Rheumatology, Albrecht Lectureship and in his recent election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His interest in the role of inflammation underpinning psychiatric disorders is a more recent, developing research theme between his Institute and the Institute of Health and Wellbeing
