Dr Der is currently employed as unit statistician in the MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit, a position he has held since September 1995. His research interests include the impact of material and cognitive factors on health and the analysis of longitudinal data. Since 1999 he has collaborated with Ian Deary analyzing cognitive data, especially IQ and reaction time (RT), from a number of studies, addressing issues such as: the relationship of IQ to RT, of both to mortality, the ageing of RT through adult life, and age changes in cognitive function in later life. Prior to 1995 he worked in psychiatric epidemiology at the Institute of Psychiatry, on psychiatric case registers, and on the development of the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN). For several years he was on the WHO editorial committee for SCAN.
