Professor Cooper has been Professor of Learning Disabilities at the University of Glasgow since 1999. She is also Deputy Director of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. 

Her research is focussed on the epidemiology of mental ill-health and health inequalities experienced by adults with intellectual disabilities, and trials of complex interventions, and she has published extensively in these areas. She chaired the work producing Diagnostic Criteria for Psychiatric Disorders for Adults with Learning Disabilities (DC-LD) published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2001, is an advisory group member for the World Health Organisation’s revisions for ICD-11, and is leading the work on problem behaviours for people with intellectual disabilities for ICD-11. She is co-editor of the leading journal in her field, the Journal of Intellectual Disabilities Research

She was a member of the Neuroscience, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology panel for RAE 2008, and the MRC-led strategic review of mental health research funding on behalf of OSCHR, published in 2011. She is currently serving on the Chief Scientist Office Health Services and Population Research committee.
