Mindfulness based interventions in epilepsy

Funding RS Macdonald Trust
From/to 2016

Stress, anxiety and depression are common among people who have epilepsy – a number of factors including the unpredictability of seizures and medication side effects can play a role. In addition, such psychological conditions can also contribute to epileptic activity and make managing the disease more difficult.

A number of studies and systematic reviews have investigated psychological treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy for people with epilepsy. Mindfulness based interventions have also been the focus of some studies, however no systematic reviews have specifically focused on the use of mindfulness for people with epilepsy and co-morbid stress, anxiety and depression.

The aim of our systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness as a therapeutic intervention for people with epilepsy.
