Current and recent activity at Glasgow in Synthetic Biology

Welcome to the Glasgow Synthetic Biology Centre. We are a multi-disciplinary research centre bringing together world leading biologists, chemists and engineers from the College of Medicine, Veterinary and Life Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering with the aim of taking a leading global role in the development of novel approaches and technologies in the area of Synthetic Biology.

Synthetic biology is the application of engineering tools and principles to the design and manufacture of biologically based parts, novel devices and systems as well as the redesign of existing, natural biological systems, for a useful purpose. It has the potential to deliver important new applications and improve existing industrial processes - resulting in economic growth and job creation.
We believe that Synthetic Biology will have a transformative role when applied to areas including energy, health, agriculture, chemicals, waste-treatment, sensors and materials research. Synthetic Biology will also provide new insights into fundamental biological principles. The centre presents new opportunities for scientific collaboration and education, and will act as a hub bringing together researchers, industry, and government so that innovations can be rapidly used to address society’s needs.
Research in the centre is funded by BBSRC, EPSRC and TSB
