Pub Plan...
The Institute is renowned for being a very friendly place to work, with members of all research groups mixing freely both during the working day and afterwards. Many members of the Institute go for a social drink on Friday evenings (after the regular research seminars that take place every Friday afternoon) - since there are many different potential destinations within walking distance of the main University campus, the chosen pub is announced in the weekly Institute newsletter (BAHmail) and on a dedicated Institute Pub Plan Facebook page, which is also used for other social announcements.
Social Events
The Institute has an annual Christmas event that features a lecture from a visiting ornithologist, followed by a party (with buffet meal) and finally a ceilidh (= dance). While the ceilidh music is provided by a live professional band, the tradition is that the party features a short musical item by the ad hoc Institute band, made up of anyone in the Institute who is prepared to play a musical instrument in public. Everyone at least pretends that they enjoy listening to it....

Past Viva Celebrations - Amazing Cakes!
It is the tradition in the Institute for there to be celebratory drinks and cake when PhD students pass their oral examination - and the research students are getting ever more ambitious in trying to make a cake that sums up the topic of the PhD thesis, as is clear from the examples given below
