SCENE - The University Field Station
SCENE, the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment, is the field station of the University of Glasgow. As part of the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, SCENE is dedicated to excellence in field research and teaching. Situated amidst the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the pioneering teaching and research facility has since 1946, been committed to understanding the mechanisms that govern the natural world and the impact of humans upon these. Today’s research emphasis is on a wide range of topics across ecology, evolutionary biology, eco-physiology, environmental change and disease ecology. Research at SCENE also addresses conservation concerns, resource management and environmentally sustainable development.
SCENE provides high quality facilities for teaching and training. Most importantly, its access to varied surrounding natural environments exposes students to a broad range of natural, semi-natural and managed habitats, as well as to the inspiration of its spectacular natural beauty. A new research building provides excellent infrastructure for both lab and field research. Teaching facilities and accommodation are currently being greatly expanded with the construction of a new building, targeted for opening in late 2013. With sustainable construction and energy efficiency as priorities, this will be one of the 'greenest' buildings in Scotland.
SCENE is a hospitable place. In addition to local researchers and teachers, the field station hosts groups from the rest of the UK and abroad who come to visit us in appreciation of SCENE’s research and teaching facilities.
