SCENE - The University Field Station
Situated amidst the spectacular natural beauty of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, our pioneering teaching and research facility has, since 1946, been committed to understanding the mechanisms that govern the natural world and the impact of humans upon these.
Our teachers and researchers believe the need for fundamental and applied environmental research and field teaching in the natural sciences, has never been greater. SCENE offers the opportunity to study some of the most important questions facing mankind... how we manage climate change; the impact of industrialization; threats to biodiversity; the effects of pollution.
Established 60 years ago by the University of Glasgow, SCENE is part of the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine and enables training for over 600 undergraduates each year, in addition to providing state-of-the-art facilities for researchers from many disciplines.
The research wing was completed in autumn 2006. The teaching building is currently under development, with opening targeted for late 2013.
The new facility
Now, a new state-of-the-art £7m facility is planned on this unique site in the National Park. With sustainable construction and energy efficiency as priorities, this will be one of the 'greenest' buildings in Scotland.
