Globalisation, Competitiveness and Sustainability

This research theme extends across multi-disciplinary perspectives on globalisation and its impact on economies, societies, organisations and the processes within. It also encompasses research on internationalisation as a multi-faceted competitive response to global change that brings both opportunities and challenges to local and international communities. Widely expressed in research in this theme are concerns about sustainability which beg innovative and creative thinking in research and new combinations and applications of knowledge to current and future problems.  The scope of this theme is immense and extends beyond topics that immediately address issues relating to international comparisons or the cross-border transfer of capabilities, competencies, resources and competitiveness.  The scope is such that those interested are likely to also belong to other themes including those on health and well-being, governance, learning and justice as well as to those in the sciences, medicine and life sciences, and the arts.

Initial meetings in this theme suggested a wide range of expertise on topics and research and dissemination methods applicable across subject domains including:

  • Globalisation, internationalisation, innovation and other processes of change and their impact including competitiveness and sustainability
  • Cross-national comparative studies including health, economics, policy, culture, regulatory and legal frameworks, and management.
  • Ethics, accountability, social and corporate responsibility, and the development of regulations, guidelines and codes.
  • Competitiveness and performance including knowledge, knowledge transfer and spill-over effects.
  • Temporal and spatial challenges of globalisation including location, local and international e-communities, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship and development.
  • Methods of understanding, methods of research and forecasting including variance and process approaches, evaluation and effects and outcomes.
