Professor John Pisapia
Professor Pisapia was ASRF Visiting Senior Research Fellow (May-August 2012), working with Professor Tony Townsend in the School of Education. His research, during his stay, focussed on whether group/individual thinking and leader action in interdisciplinary teams inhibits or facilitates group processes and product development. He was also assessing the structural and institutional process hurdles that must be overcome for interdisciplinary groups to function effectively.
John Pisapia is a Professor of Leadership Studies at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, a Fulbright Scholar at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Adam Smith Visiting Scholar at the University of Glasgow, founding director of the Strategic Leader Network, and recipient of the International School's Association award for profound leadership in international education. John was a teacher, principal, state superintendent of schools in the USA, founding director of the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC), and the recipient of the American Association of School Administrator's professor of the year.
His work in strategic thinking and execution has received national and international attention. His book, The Strategic Leader describes his theory of strategic leadership and presents the tactics that lead away from compliance responses and toward engagement, commitment, and self managed organizations. He has developed two research instruments and two organizational protocols to support his ideas on leading. The Strategic Thinking Questionnaire (STQ) measures the leader’s use of systems thinking, reframing and reflection. The Strategic Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ), measures five actions leaders use in leading their organizations: managing, transforming, bonding, bartering, and bridging. The Strategic Thinking Protocol fosters a new way of strategic planning.
John is the founder of the Strategic Leader Network (SLN) a global learning community focused on the principles of strategic leadership. He’s has been called the “global professor,” teaching and consulting with leaders in education and business in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, India, Turkey, Europe, USA, and South America. His articles have appeared in the Leadership Review, International Journal of Leadership Education, The American Journal of Business Research, Educational Management and Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Government Union Review, New China Frontiers, and the NOLPE Law Review.
