Introduction to Structural Equation Modelling: A 2-Day seminar

Professor Joaquin Aldas-Manzano, Universitat de València, and Visiting Fellow at the Adam Smith Research Foundation, University of Glasgow

Date and time: 13-14 June 2011

If you are interested in attending, please contact Wendy Weaver as soon as possible, to reserve a place.

Scope: The seminar is addressed to those researchers or doctoral students with no previous experience on SEM. No statistical background is required. The seminar is taught with a minimum of statistical notation and is based on applied examples to introduce the different steps that are necessary to estimate a SEM using EQS 6.1.

Syllabus:

1. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA)

  • a. The rationale under Covariance Based Structural Equation Modelling (CBSEM)
  • b. Measurement and structural component of a model
  • c. The identification issue
  • d. Estimation of the model: overview of estimation methods
  • e. Evaluation of the model goodness-of-fit (Gof): Chi square statistic and Gof indices
  • f. Interpreting the results.
  • g. Applied exercise: a simple TAM (1)

2. Structural Equation Models (SEM)

  • a. Adding the structural part of the model, what changes?
  • b. Modification indices: uses and misuses.
  • c. Applied exercise: a simple TAM (2)

3. Validation of the measurement model

  • a. Reliability: Cronbach’s alpha, Composite Reliability, Average Variance Extracted
  • b. Convergence validity: loadings significance and sizes, Lagrange Multipliers
  • c. Discriminant validity: Chi-square difference test, confidence interval test, AVE vs. correlations test

4. Wrapping up. Do-it-yourself exercise: the employee retention model

Materials: Slides, exercises databases and software will be provided in advance.
