Sustainability

How do we manage climate change? What are the main threats to biodiversity? Can the insertion of ethics into accounting have an impact on population explosions, energy security, poverty in Africa? University of Glasgow researchers are constantly examining some of the most important questions mankind today.

Green SCENE

Recent investment into a £7m project to revitalise the University’s Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) has provided leading-edge facilities for environmental research. A purpose-built field station on the banks of Loch Lomond, SCENE is surrounded by natural habitats of international importance and offers state-of-the-art research facilities including wet and dry laboratory space as well as aquarium systems to researchers both within and beyond the University.

Playing our part

Whether bringing academics together in our Centre for International Development to explore sustainable solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa or examining how langoustine can offer a solution to the over-fishing crisis, Glasgow is searching for ways to make a difference. And as a base for diverse research into sustainability, the University’s newest facilities are also a showcase for sustainable design in action. SCENE has won a string of awards for its sensible use of resources, including a Scottish Low Carbon Building Award and an ‘Excellent’ grade in the British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method: making it one of the greenest buildings in Scotland. In 2007 environmental news and commentary magazine, Grist, placed the University of Glasgow in the top 15 most environmentally friendly universities in the world: only 2nd in Europe.
