Research Assessment Exercise
The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) provides the most thorough and reliable reflection of the quality of research being conducted by universities across the UK. Rankings by the RAE 2008 conclude:
- History of Art is the most highly rated of any university in the UK.
- The School of Veterinary Medicine is rated the joint best in the UK.
- Glasgow’s research in cancer studies and accounting and finance is rated in the UK top five.
- A further 14 subjects are rated in the top ten in the UK: cardiovascular medicine; infection and immunology; dentistry; allied health professions (nursing); physics; computer science and informatics; electrical and electronic engineering; town and country planning; library and information management; psychology; European studies; Celtic studies; English language and literature; drama, dance and performing arts.
- 14 subjects are rated top in Scotland.
All of this means that we can make important discoveries, whether that’s finding a way to detect malaria in minutes, or contributing to the biggest particle physics experiment in the world – the Large Hadron Collider. Our broad base of expertise, which incorporates arts, sciences, social sciences and medicine, enables us to create interdisciplinary teams and push the boundaries of what’s possible, from tackling cancer to working to produce solar fuel by means of artificial photosynthesis.
