Sustainable Development Seminar: “Why is wind power so expensive? And can anything be done about this?”

Tuesday 22 May 2012, 16.15 – 18.15, Seminar Room 1 (Yudowitz), Wolfson Medical School Building, University of Glasgow
Campus Map Location C8: http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_1887_en.pdf

Speaker: Professor Gordon Hughes (Professor of Economics, University of Edinburgh)

Wind farms have high capital costs and low operating costs, similar to large scale hydro.  However, intermittent supplies increase the cost of managing an electricity system and require either substantial storage/backup capacity or export outlets.  The talk will examine the economics of wind power in the UK from a system perspective and consider what incentives may be required to reduce the costs of combining wind power with other sources of power generation.

About the speaker: Gordon A. Hughes's main fields of interest are natural resources, environmental economics and public economics.

The Seminar will be followed by a reception sponsored by the SDN in the Wolfson Atrium.

Free and open to the public.  Download: 120522 Hughes FLYER SDN lecture

Sharing surplus and underused resources within and between organisations, to reduce costs carbon and waste; A case study.

Friday, June 22, 2012 from 10:00 - 13:00, Glasgow City Council, Exchange House, 231 George St, G1 1QU Glasgow

This free event will demonstrate the financial and environmental savings that are possible by sharing resources and equipment within and between organisations- using Sunderland City Council and Northumberland County Council's experiences as a case study.

The event will interest those in Local Authority, NHS, HE/FE, Central Govt, LSPs and private sector organisations.  In particular, those in procurement, sustainable development, finance, waste, facilities management and shared services.

After a major restructure, in April last year Sunderland City Council started using an online resource management tool to safely and conveniently redistribute surplus and underused resources within the organisation. Using the system, the Council has saved almost £80K in avoided procurement.
