How we measure ourselves

The two key measures of research performance, namely research quality and research volume are assessed through a wide range of international and national statistics and league tables.

Internationally the Times Higher/QS World University Rankings provide an annual ranking of research-intensive universities world-wide.  Currently a Top 100 university - 83rd in the world - our ambition is to be in the Top 50.

We have set targets in a range of key performance indicators to enable us to assess our research performance in pursuit of that ambition.  Our main KPIs include:

  • Research volume
    • Total research income and income per academic FTE
    • Research income from industry
    • International research incom
  • Research quality
    • Performance in RAE2008 and future research assessment exercises
  • Postgraduate research students
    • Postgraduate population
    • PGRs per academic FTE
    • % international PGRs
