Urban Research

Programme Structure

The MRes in Urban Research is a flexible programme: whilst most of our students study for the Research Masters on a full-time basis (12 months) it can also be undertaken part-time over two or three years. Some courses are offered in the evenings; other courses are delivered in intensive, 'conference style' blocks. Teaching is led by staff from the College of Social Sciences Graduate School and from Urban Studies working at the cutting-edge of their fields.

Students taking the MRes Programme in Urban Research take 120 taught credits and complete a 60 credit dissertation.

There are three components to the taught element:

  • Core research methods courses, provided by the College of Social Sciences Graduate School:
    • Social Science Statistics I (20 credits)
    • Qualitative Methods (20 credits)
    • Introduction to Social Theory for Researchers (20 credits)
  • Subject-related core course: Changing Cities and Neighbourhoods (20 credits)
  • Optional courses including subject specific options and more advanced research methods courses
