Translation Studies: Translation & Professional Practice

MSc Programme Structure

Students on the MSc in Translation Studies will take the following courses:

Semester 1 (September to December)
Students will study the two mandatory translation courses (A and B) and one option (C) in semester 1.

A. Mandatory core course: Translation Studies in Theory and Practice
B. Mandatory language-specific course: Advanced Translation and Language Study 1 (the language chosen must already have been studied at Honours level)
C. One option from the following:

  • An additional Advanced Translation and Language Study 1 course (focusing on a different language already studied at Honours level)
  • A postgraduate or undergraduate option course
  • A Directed Study course (on approval from the tutor and course convenor)
  • A beginner’s or intermediate level language course

Semester 2 (January to April)
Students will study the two mandatory translation courses (D and E) and one option (F) in semester 2.

D. Mandatory core course: Translator’s Toolkit
E. Mandatory language-specific course: Advanced Translation and Language Study 2 (continuing the first language studied in Semester 1)
F. One option from the following:

  • An additional Advanced Translation and Language Study 1 course (continued from semester 1)
  • A postgraduate option course
  • A Directed Study course or creative translation practice (on approval from the tutor and course convenor)
  • A beginner’s or intermediate level language course

Vacation period (May to August)
On successful completion of all courses in semesters 1 and 2, students will be required to write a dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words or undertake an equivalent translation project, including translation analysis.  This piece of written work must be submitted in August.
