Student testimonials

Aygerim Erikqyzy, Kazakhstan

Why did you choose this course?

"The course is unique as it embraces the tourism development from different perspectives. Examples of international experiences provide a deep understanding of the strong connection between tourism and society, culture, nature, ecology, economy, policy and global processes."

What were your motivations?

"The desire to broad my knowledge about regional tourism development and to study tourism activity in connection with socio-cultural aspects played major roles in choosing the course."

What are your future plans?

"I hope to combine this new knowledge and my past experience to help my country develop a sustainable tourism industry."

What were your favourite aspects of the course?

"One of the advantages of the course is the opportunity to involve yourself academically and professionally in the direction that you choose. Also, the course lets you examine tourist activity from positive as well as from negative side."

What were the best aspects of the Dumfries Campus?

"I think Dumfries Campus is the best place to study. The small groups, friendly staff, modern and comfortable library, and beautiful scenery outside the classroom windows made my learning process much more pleasant and productive. I felt part of a community and part of a big international family."

What about student life in Dumfries and the people you met?

"People in Dumfries are very friendly and helpful. They show a great interest in different cultures and countries. It is easy to break cultural and linguistic barriers in Dumfries.

"The perfect location of Dumfries made me really experience Scotland. I could compare my life in Dumfries with living in health and recreation resort! There is a good environment for sport activities such as hiking, biking and golf. The town provides a good choice of restaurants, pubs and other entertainment centres.  The cost of living is much lower than in other cities in the UK."

"Given its reputation, The University of Glasgow seemed the right choice. What better a place than Scotland for a global perspective? In an increasingly globalising world, travel has always been my passion; it helps me understand the different cultures of people in different places. This is what triggered my choice of tourism as a career.

"Since I was particularly keen on doing something related to culture and heritage, the MLitt in Tourism, Heritage & Development seemed apt, and the course is unique. My favourite aspects of the programme included the interesting field trips and the freedom of expression. The lecturers valued our opinions and gave us enough freedom to do things that we were interested in.

"I also found the people of Dumfries are very friendly and helpful, and the university campus is pristine and serene. Dumfries also has some exceptional facilities for mountain biking. Since I am into mountain biking, this was great."

Marishaa Desai, India

"I chose the University of Glasgow as it is one of the top Universities in the UK and also it is the only one to offer this particular course.

"My reason for picking this course in particular was because it entwines the study of heritage, regional development and sustainability well, something that is unique and often ignored. I felt it was very important with the current climate change scenario. The course examines Tourism and Heritage from a social sciences perspective rather than tourism management, which is rare.

"I really enjoyed the field visits, and the freedom we were allowed by our lecturers to choose our assignment topics. This helped up explore our own interests and put in into the context of our course requirements. This way, the course was more interactive."
