Structural Engineering & Mechanics

Get involved: activities beyond your degree

students in cloistersThe University of Glasgow offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to complement your studies. Apart from the huge range of sports and other societies organized by the University, the following links provide further information on some groups which are particularly relevant to students on this MSc programme:

  • The Institution of Structural Engineers – the IStructE is the world's largest membership organisation dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering. The Scottish branch of the IStructE organises a number of events throughout the year with evening technical meetings held in Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as social events and awards. Student membership of the IStructE is free.
  • Engineers Without Borders – an international development organisation that removes barriers to development through engineering. The University of Glasgow has an active branch where you can participate in weekly meetings with projects that allow you to apply your engineering knowledge to real world applications. This is often the first step for a placement with a development organisation abroad or perhaps even a career in the voluntary sector.
  • The University of Glasgow International Society – a very active society who organise a diverse range of events throughout the year from weekend trips to the Highlands of Scotland to international movie nights and salsa classes. The international society is a great place to make new friends, especially if you are new to Glasgow, and is open to all nationalities, not just overseas students.
