Programme Structure

Core courses: 
There are three ten-week courses (October to December) and two ten-week courses (January – March).    

Optional Courses:
These are courses for which students can choose their preference, running from January to March in ten-week sessions.

  • Core course 1: Social Science Statistics 1 (semester 1)
  • Core course 2: Qualitative methods (semester 1)
  • Core course 3: Social Science Statistics 2 (semester 2)
  • Core course 4: Advanced Qualitative methods (semester 2)
  • Core course 5: Current Issues in Social Theory (semester 1)

Dissertation:
Students select their dissertation early in the second semester (January) and proceed to develop this alongside their other courses. After the examination in April-May they give full-time attention to the dissertation, until submission at end of August.

Assessment of M Res courses
A variety of assessment methods are used, as appropriate to the subject matter of the different courses. Normally, essays, exercises and project work will be required.
Each course is assessed on the basis of written course work in the form of a project/lab report and/or an essay.
