Irena Baboi, Romania (2015-16)

Irena Baboi'I have been a CEES student for six years now, and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it. The department's quality of teaching, wide range of topics covered, and high level  of support received made it easy for me to decide to continue my studies here, and the friendliness and warmth of everyone in the department significantly contributed to my feeling at home in Glasgow. As an undergraduate student, I had the opportunity to learn more about the history and development of the region, visit the Baltics, and better understand the issues concerning the countries studied. As an MSc student, I improved my in-depth research and analysis skills, undertook an excellent internship with the AKE Intelligence Group in London, and specialised on my main area of interest.

As a result, I am currently a research assistant for the Human Security Centre's Security and Defence Unit, writing analysis pieces on the Balkans. Last but certainly not least, from a personal point of view, studying on this programme has meant meeting like-minded people from all over the world, who share similar interests and are always excited about travelling to the region together. These six years have shaped not only my research interests, but also my academic, professional and even personal development. At all times throughout these years, I had someone to turn to when I had questions, needed advice, or just wanted to talk about something, and for that I will never be able to thank them enough.'
