Jane Wilson, Scottish student, graduated 2008
After graduating, I held a variety of jobs before joining Edinburgh City Council, working in social work services as an administrator. I loved this job - it was a Department very much focused on service delivery and it really felt like you were seeing policy being implemented on the ground.
In April 2010, I got a temporary post within Scottish Government and that’s where I am still. I joined the Animal Health and Welfare department, working as a Policy Officer. I was involved with various things including drafting legislation, providing guidance documents for local authorities, ensuring compliance with European legislation, carrying out desk research, drafting consultations and briefing ministers.
In January this year, I started as a policy analyst, also in Animal Welfare, where I am involved with ministerial correspondence, frequently liaising with our communications team and private office. I am currently involved in a mini-consultation exercise where we are seeking to develop policy from a 'bottom up' stakeholder-led initiative.
There are a lot of links in my job to the core course on Contemporary Government and Governance, and I have also been able to use knowledge from courses on policy analysis, evaluation, and policy design and delivery. It is great to be putting some of my learning into practice!
