Psychological Studies MSc
This programme is jointly delivered by the Schools of Education and Psychology.
This Masters in Psychological Studies is designed to provide you with a broad and critical awareness of psychological theory and practice, together with opportunities to focus on aspects of psychology with particular relevance to your own experience and interests.
- If your first degree does not provide you with the necessary qualification for a career in psychology, this programme enables you to to build on the transferable skills you have attained in your previous undergraduate
degree and provides you with the necessary level of study in psychology which is acceptable to the British Psychological Society. - The programme is designed to provide you with a broad and critical awareness of psychological theory and practice, together with opportunities to focus on aspects of psychology with particular relevance to your own experience and interests.
- You will develop an enquiring, problem-oriented mind with sufficient awareness of critical research and applications in psychology to enable successful pursuit of careers in psychology and related disciplines.
- You will also gain a range of generic intellectual and practical skills including initiative, self-reliance and critical ability, which are easily adaptable to the needs of the labour market.
Programme overview
- MSc: 12 months full-time;
The MSc in Psychological Studies programme consists of a series of eight core courses: two in Research Methods (20 credits each) and six others (10 credits each), plus a research project (60 credits). You will also need to complete two optional courses (10 credits each) totalling 180 credits. Additional course elements include attendance at six research project sessions throughout the academic year; you will also be allocated a supervisor to advise you with the general conduct of your research.

Career prospects
As this programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, successful graduates from the programme are eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the Society (GBC). Our graduates have successfully progressed to further professional training in the field of psychology on programmes such as clinical psychology, educational psychology, forensic psychology and occupational psychology. Others have progressed to research posts and PhD study. Some graduates have used the qualification to advance their skills in their current employment and progressed through to promoted posts.

English language requirements
For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training):
- overall score 6.5
- no sub-test less than 6.0
- or equivalent scores in another recognised qualification (see below)
Common equivalent English language qualifications:
- ibTOEFL: 92; no sub-test less than 20
- CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): B minimum
- CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English): C minimum
- PTE Academic (Person Test of English, Academic test): 60; no sub-test less than 59

Glasgow International College offers Foundation courses to upgrade your academic qualifications.
Visa requirements and proof of English language level
It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old. A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website. If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.
