Popular Music

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to be admitted to the M.Litt?

We generally expect applicants to have a degree at the UK level of 2:1 or above. However we treat applicants on their own merits and welcome applicants from varied backgrounds. We especially welcome applications with relevant music industries’ experience who can show evidence of the ability to undertake postgraduate study. All applicants will be expected to provide at least one academic reference who can attest to their suitability for postgraduate study.

Academic Entry Requirements

Is funding available?

A list of possible funding opportunities can be found at the Graduate School website.

Do I have to be a musician to apply?

No. Popular Music Studies is a broad field and applicants are welcomed from a range of academic backgrounds. The only exception to this is the Creative Practice route where candidates will be expected to be musically proficient in order to complete a Creative Practice project.

When are classes taught?

Most classes are taught between 3 and 7 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.

Can I study Part Time?

Yes. The part time route takes two years with classes being taught on the Monday in the first year and Thursday in the second.

Where will my placement be? (Relates to the Music Industries programme only)

Placement opportunities will vary from year to year. We cannot guarantee that any provider will want a placement student in any given year or that the amount of placements will match the amount of students seeking them. In the event that students are not able to obtain a placement they will be transferred onto another route of the M.Litt (either the general M.Litt or Creative Practice M.Litt as appropriate).  A list of possible placement providers is provided.
