You take six taught courses: in each of the two semesters you take the philosophy research methods course and one course in each of your two optional subject areas. You also write a dissertation on a specialised topic, supported by a supervisor over the summer.
Subject areas that will be taught every year will be:
- Ethics
- Political Philosophy
- Philosophy of Mind
- Metaphysics
- Philosophy of Language
Students taking the Ethics or Politics option can choose from our standard course in the second semester or opt to take a special course in Ethics and Politics in the Classical Chinese Text Zhuangzi.
Subject areas that may be on offer, subject to demand, include, but may not be limited to:
- Epistemology
- Formal logic
- Philosophical logic
- Philosophy of mathematics
- Aesthetics
- Philosophy of religion
- History of philosophy (including Greek philosophy, the Scottish Enlightenment, Ancient Confucian philosophy and post-Kantian philosophy).
If you wish to take one or two subjects apart from the ones that we will put on every year, email fiona.macpherson@glasgow.ac.uk with details. We will take this into consideration when choosing which, if any, option courses to put on that year.
