Molecular Medicine

Structure of the MRes Programme

The MRes Programe is made up of 6 Core Courses:

1.Introduction to Molecular Research.

A short, intensive laboratory-based course, which introduces you to bench research prior to starting your placements in the research labs. You will receive excellent instruction in basic molecular biology research skills which makes you well-placed to get the best out of your research placements.

2.Research Placement 1 & 2

Two 20-week Research Placements in laboratories with international reputations. The first research placement runs from mid-October to mid-March, and the second research placement runs from April till mid-August. You choose your research projects from a wide range of topics offered by the laboratories within the College. The structure of the projects and the level of supervision provide you with the opportunity to make real scientific progress and make a valuable contribution to the research of the lab.

3.Tutorial Series 1 & 2

The Tutorial Series consist of weekly two-hour sessions in which you will develop your intellectual and transferable skills, including oral presentation, scientific writing, critical appraisal and project design and planning. This is also a chance to share experiences and learn about the other students’ research. The relatively small number of students (maximum of 10) allows staff to provide personal feedback and support throughout the course.

4.Research Proposal

This Course gives you the opportunity to integrate and extend your learning from all parts of the MRes, and allows you to develop skills in writing Research Proposals

PG Diploma Option

The PG diploma runs from mid-September to mid-August, and includes only one research placement.  In place of the Research Placement 2 and Research Proposal Courses, Diploma candidates will complete a Research Portfolio designed to showcase their practical laboratory and research skills.

How is progress assessed on the MRes Programme?

  • Introduction to Molecular Research: lab note book and reflective essay
  • Research Placements: supervisor’s report, a written project report and a short oral exam
  • Tutorial Series: oral presentations and critical appraisal assignments
  • Research Proposal: written assignment
