"Scotland is a very cold place, we will make it up by our warmth" were the opening remarks of Dr Douglas Wilcox in the introductory session of the MSc Medical Genetics program. The medical genetics department confirmed it in no uncertain terms. We had smiling face welcome us, hear us and redress us. Professional training with humane touch was the speciality at Glasgow. Despite a tight academic calendar we had many nice moments to carry and cherish.  The structure of education was unique, stimulating, challenging and rewarding (taxing off course!!)….. very useful later-on in making a choice of PhD and while working as research technician.

GUSRC Student Teaching Awards Best Subject Area 2012
On Friday 23rd March, the Glasgow University Students Representative Counsel hosted the GUSRC Student Teaching Awards.  These awards are voted for by the student community. The School of Medicine had nominations in 5 of the 11 categories in which our very own Dr Ed Tobias was nominated for Best Teacher and Medical Genetics as Best Subject Area. We were delighted to have been nominated by our students but things got even better as Medical Genetics won the overall award for Best Subject Area in the whole University of Glasgow!! This is a great achievement for the department; we are all extremely honoured and thankful to our students who voted.

I absolutely loved Glasgow…..the people are very friendly...to work with people that have such a variety of backgrounds; professional, personality and cultural. I loved the campus with the old buildings, and the museums are wonderful and have easy access. I only have fond memories of the course, and my classmates.

Now, I am an Assistant Professor in Zonguldak, Turkey….an MSc in Medical Genetics from Glasgow University has helped me greatly in my career and I strongly recommend the MSc to colleagues. Members of staff were very friendly and you could ask and consult anything.

I enjoyed every single minute of it. The staff members were extremely helpful and friendly and that made it great, especially for international students like myself. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds and that enriched my life a great deal. Glasgow is a wonderful and diverse city for the international student. The friendliness of the people are bountiful and the memories of the great city will always remain in one's mind.

This course offers a comprehensive understanding of this important specialty and can serve as a basic training for future practice and study. The staff and faculty of the Duncan Guthrie Institute were friendly and helpful, even after we had graduated.

I truly believe I achieved more learning in my one year as a mature post-graduate student than I did in my four years as an undergraduate. Would I go back again if I could afford it?  Definitely!

The Medical Gentics course in its structure comprises all fields of study (i.e cytogenetics, molecular , biochemical and clinical genetics) which enables the student to be familiarized in just a small period of time with all these fields. This also provides the means to compete in the real life working enviroment. Thank you very much, it was tough but it was worth every bit of it!

I would throughly recommend the MSc in Medical Genetics. It's a great course that provides a broad and solid grounding in medical genetics. A good range of subject areas are covered, which is helpful if you are unsure which area you'd like to go into afterwards. The course is taught in the medical genetics department of a hospital, by practicing clinical geneticists. The staff on the course are incredibly friendly and approachable and always available to provide help and advice. There is also a fantastic mix of people on the course from all over the world. I met so many interesting people and made some really good friends. I have worked at Nature Publishing Group for the past few years as the associate editor of a medical journal  and now I'm a freelance science writer.

I found the staff of Medical Genetics to be very supportive during my MSc year during which I had to deal with various family illnesses and bereavements.

Being based in the genetics department of a children’s hospital, with working molecular genetics and cytogenetics labs, gives a great insight into how things work. The course focuses on how to apply your knowledge practically, looking at real life situations, but also looks to future. I am still in touch with many of my fellow students and the staff and will be for a long time.

I learned many things …..how to write scientific reports, to stick to the deadline, squeeze your brain to come up with useful and original ideas, interact and share opinions with colleagues and discuss cases in the form of "problem-based learning", think critically, understand the basis of protocols and techniques, and learn how best to communicate science to non-specialists.It is always great to have the opportuntiy to study in one of the largest and most reputable universities in the UK and have classmates who are joyful and diligent at the same time, with staff who are keen to see you improving and enjoying your time during the whole period of study, in one of the most beautiful cities in pretty Scotland.

It has been 15 whole years since I joined you people in Glasgow. You all have a special place in my heart, I truly treasure all the moments at the Department and I am proud to say that I am a very good ambassador of Scotland in Greece as when I talk about Scotland, people say that I shine!

It was one of the best years of my life!

I graduated from the MSc course in 1999. At present I am the director of the cytogenetics department of the prenatal diagnosis laboratory Genomedica in Athens, Greece.

The staff were very helpful, understanding and accomodating especially as I was pregnant during the course. I really enjoyed the PBL's as they were different from the normal way of teaching and learning and I felt we learnt and understood aspects of the course better using PBL's. My undergraduate degree was molecular based and learning other aspects of medical genetics was a real eye opener. I feel that the course is unique in that we had classmates from all over the world, not just from here in Great Britain. This was especially useful when doing PBL as we were party to opinions and points of view that could be very different to our own. Glasgow University is special to me as it has so much history and it is amazing to fell part of all that history.
