The Yorkhill Hospital campus
The Yorkhill Hospital site comprises of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children as well as the Duncan Guthrie Institute for Medical Genetics (laboratory and academic block) and other associated laboratory blocks.
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children is the principal children's hospital in the West of Scotland, and one of the three largest UK paediatric centres (with Great Ormond Street Hospital and Liverpool). It has around 325 beds, and 30 neonatal intensive care unit cots, more than 100 consultants and 25 specialist registrars. It provides hospital care to the children of Glasgow and specialist tertiary care for the West of Scotland and beyond in many subspecialties including cardiology, oncology, haematology, renal medicine, neurology and neuromuscular disorders, neonatal and cardiac surgery and paediatric and adult medical genetics.
The Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics
Medical Genetics is part of the School of Medicine within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences in the University of Glasgow which is one of the largest medical schools in Europe. Medical Genetics is located on the Yorkhill Hospital site and is situated in the Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics.
Medical genetics was first taught in 1961 and the full department was established in 1973 by Professor Malcolm Ferguson-Smith.
The Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics opened in 1980 in a purpose built building which contains clinical, laboratory and teaching facilities. The Institute was the first to be specifically built for medical genetics in Europe.
The Yorkhill campus is a short walk from the main University campus.

Southern General Hospital, Laboratory Genetics Facility
This brand new, purpose built, state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2012 as the dedicated Laboratory Medicine centre for Scotland. Based at the Southern General Hospital site, this facility houses the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service which serves a population of over three million with genetic counselling clinics and the combined laboratory facilities for Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, Cancer Genetics and Clinical Genetics.
This MSc course is unique in the respect that regular scheduled lectures are given by the NHS staff specifically for the MSc Medical Genetics Course, as well as in-depth tours and tutorials given by the individual departments designed to enhance the students overall learning experience.
