The Royal Hospital for Sick Children is the principal children's hospital in the West of Scotland, and one of the three largest UK paediatric centres (with Great Ormond Street Hospital and Liverpool). It has around 325 beds, and 30 neonatal intensive care unit cots, more than 100 consultants and 25 specialist registrars. It provides hospital care to the children of Glasgow and specialist tertiary care for the West of Scotland and beyond in many subspecialties including cardiology, oncology, haematology, renal medicine, neurology and neuromuscular disorders, neonatal and cardiac surgery and paediatric and adult medical genetics.

The Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics

Medical Genetics is part of the School of Medicine within the College of Medical,Veterinary and Life Sciences in the University of Glasgow which is one of the largest medical schools in Europe. Medical Genetics is located on the Yorkhill Hospital site and is situated in the Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics which together with the Ferguson-Smith Centre houses the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service which serves a population of three million. Additional peripheral genetic clinics are held in major towns throughout the region and joint clinics are held with a number of other medical specialties. The Scottish Muscle Clinical Network is managed from the Institute of Medical Genetics and the Royal Hospital For Sick Children.

Medical genetics was first taught in 1961 and the full department was established in 1973 by Professor Malcolm Ferguson-Smith.

The Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics opened in 1980 in a purpose built building which contains clinical, laboratory and teaching facilities. The Institute was the first to be specifically built for medical genetics in Europe.

The Ferguson-Smith Centre was opened in January 2004, in a building adjacent to the Duncan Guthrie Institute and contains the clinical and counselling services.

The Yorkhill campus is a short walk from the main University campus.
