The politics and economy of health, wellbeing and social citizenship 

Explores the various social, economic and political forces underpinning the construction and reconstruction of state welfare provision and provides a framework for critical analyses of contemporary public sector policies and alignments.

Public sector systems: policy and planning

Provides a rigorous and grounded consideration of the nature and sustainability of the various systems that lie at the heart of the development and delivery of policies and strategies in the modern welfare sector.

Elective courses

Communication and management psychology

Develops your understanding of areas of psychology pertinent to communication and management and of their central relevance to effective communication within the workplace and across sectors.

Making ethical judgements

Given that competent managers are expected to be familiar with both ethical problems and their practical resolution, this course communicates a broad understanding of ethical principles and encourages shared understandings of ethical practice and conflict resolution.

Policy and principles of research in the public sector

Provides the knowledge and skills that will increase your competence to understand the research process; commission research, evaluate complex interventions and manage and engage in more effective, evidence-based practice.

Media health and wellbeing

Examines the way in which media messages about health and wellbeing are created, disseminated and read, and the implications for developing and promoting agendas for health, wellbeing, and social citizenship, and public policy and practice.

Career prospects

Graduates will typically be employed in the voluntary, statutory or private sectors at a management and project management level, usually in the broad fields of health and social wellbeing.

Statutory employers are likely to include National Health Services (including ancillary services, public health, and health improvement); a range of local government departments including social and community services; housing and trading standards, and a raft of voluntary organisations ranging from large national and international concerns to smaller, local organisations and social enterprises.

For those already in employment, promotion opportunities will be enhanced.
