International Cinemas MSc

The Masters in International Cinemas identifies and analyses the mechanisms behind the increasing presence of international cinema on our screens and film festivals.
- The MSc has been developed to equip you with specialised knowledge so that you can pursue a professional career in distribution/exhibition of films or pursue further studies in this field of scholarship.
- The city is an important centre of film and television production and is the centre for much of the Scottish independent production sector.
- A limited number of work placements are available with important local ‘outlets’ of world cinema such as the Glasgow Film Theatre, the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Africa in Motion Festival.
- You will be based at our Gilmorehill Centre, which offers its own cinema and is also home to the leading international journal Screen.
Programme overview
- MSc: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time
Core components of the curriculum will provide you with a foundation in the areas that drive film as a global medium: the industry, its institutions, the market, and film aesthetics.
Beyond this foundation, the structure of the programme allows you to follow pathways that are relevant your own cinematic interests and experiences. Your course options and dissertation topic allow you to specialise in areas of international cinema that you would like to pursue through your career or further research.
There will be a limited number of work placements which will be offered to the students on a competitive basis. In these cases the work placement will replace the dissertation.
You will complete a core course over the two semesters and take three optional courses.

Career prospects
Your specialist understanding of global film distribution and exhibition will make you a excellent candidate for roles on film festivals and in theatres.
Many graduates will have the opportunity for further study in this field.

Normally, at least a 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in Film & Television Studies or a related subject from Arts or Social Sciences.
