Information Security (MRes)

Why choose this degree?

If you have a very good undergraduate degree in computing and you wish to advance your knowledge and research skills in the area of information security, this MRes programme is designed for you.

The programme includes a thorough grounding in research methods, together with experience of developing a research proposal and conducting research projects. The programme will prepare you for a research position in higher education or in an industrial laboratory.

Computer systems are frequently compromised by the efforts of opportunistic hackers. In many countries, legislation is forcing companies to take information security more seriously. Information security requires a clear understanding of relevant technological, social, and organizational issues, as well as the relationships between them.

Excellent teaching

Our teaching is excellent. You need not take our word for it. Every year, the National Student Survey gives all final-year students in UK universities a chance to rate the quality of teaching they have received. The key question is “Overall, how satisfied are you with the education you have received?” In the Computing Science subject area, the University of Glasgow regularly receives a satisfaction rating of around 95%, and was ranked 1st in the UK in 2007, 2008, and 2010.

Excellent research

Our research is excellent. Again, you need not take our word for it. Every 5–6 years, the Research Evaluation Framework rates the quality of research in each subject area in universities throughout the UK. In the Computing Science subject area, the University of Glasgow was ranked 8th in the UK (with 30% of our research rated world-leading and a further 50% ranked internationally excellent) in the most recent research evaluation (2008).

We have seven major research groups: computer vision and graphics; embedded, networked, and distributed systems; formal analysis, theory, and algorithms; human computer interaction; inference, dynamics, and interaction; information retrieval; software engineering and information security. Most MSc students choose projects offered by these groups, giving them an opportunity to go on to PhD study. You can find details of our research at www.glasgow.ac.uk/schools/computing/research.
