Human Rights & International Politics (MRes)

Background

The MRes in Human Rights and International Politics is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to pursue a PhD in human rights related disciplines, in particular Politics/International Relations and other social science disciplines. It will also be attractive to those who wish to receive a research-based qualification at Masters level.

It is unique in providing a truly interdisciplinary approach to the study of human rights, including politics, law and other disciplines. This is enhanced by being within the interdisciplinary School of Social and Political Sciences.

The programme introduces theoretical and empirical perspectives on key topics in the area of human rights, while also providing training in social science research methodology to fulfil he postgraduate research training requirements of the Economic and Social Research Council. It thus serves as excellent preparation for doctoral work, and is eligible for the ESRC 1+3 scheme.

The programme is enhanced by a number of elements, most notable of which is the optional 5 day study trip to Geneva, held after classes and exams end. The purpose of the trip is to introduce students to a range of human rights and humanitarian organisations based in Geneva in order to provide more in depth engagement with those who work in the field of human rights, connect what students have learned in their classes to real world institutions, and to get a sense of possible career opportunities.

We actively promote student-centred teaching and guarantee individual dissertation supervision. Our students benefit from intensive teaching by political scientists with strong publishing profiles and international reputations in their areas of expertise.

You will also benefit from being taught by staff from one of the UK's leading institutions for political studies. No other University in Scotland produces as much world class research as Politics in Glasgow (as indicated in the latest Research Assessment Exercise).
