History (with an emphasis on the History of Medicine)
Programme structure
As in the MLitt/MSc in History, this programme includes a core research training course, a choice of five optional courses and a supervised dissertation.
MSc in History with an emphasis on History of Medicine (College of Social Sciences)
Students who wish to take the Social Sciences route undertake their History of Medicine Studies with training courses appropriate to the Social Sciences discipline, with a strong vocational emphasis. British students funded by the Economic & Social Research Council are required to take these courses.
A typical course programme would be as follows:
- Core course: Research Resources and Skills for Historians
- Two courses in History of Medicine
- Three courses drawn from the Social Sciences training courses: quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or Introduction to Social Theory for Researchers, (OR) two social sciences training courses plus one history courses from a range of options.
- Dissertation: on a history of medicine theme
MLitt in History with an emphasis on History of Medicine (College of Arts)
Students taking the MLitt route choose one or two courses in medical history and pursue a dissertation on a medical subject. Two courses and a dissertation on a medical subject are compulsory for students funded by the Wellcome Trust.
