Global Cities MSc

The Masters in Global Cities is a challenging and innovative programme which offers students the opportunity to engage with in-depth theoretical, empirical and methodological knowledge about cities in both historical and contemporary contexts. Covering a wide range of analyses of urban changes and challenges, the programme takes a comparative approach to urbanism and engages with the industrialised cities of the global North as well as fast growing cities in the global South.

  • You will gain a broad understanding of the social, political, economic, and environmental forces that shape our cities; the processes of urban development; urban challenges at the global, regional and local levels; and innovative policies and practice to address these challenges.
  • Critical thinking will be developed in urban theories and research, and knowledge of contemporary government and governance of cities.
  • You will benefit from the impressive and significant built environment offered by the city of Glasgow, which went through many different stages of urbanization, industrialization and regeneration. You will be taught by a group of world leading urban researchers whose expertise cover many international and regional cities in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asian.
  • A programme of guest seminars offered in the School of Social and Political Science will be available for you to benefit from, therefore enhancing your study.

Visa requirements and proof of English language level

It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old. A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website. If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa, your qualification must be one of the secure English language tests accepted by UK Border Agency:
