Finance & Economic Development MSc

Programme overview
- MSc: 12 months full-time;
You will take four core courses and select three optional courses from the list below.
Core courses
- Growth and development
- Money, finance and growth
- Financial institutions and markets in developing countries.
- Research methods and dissertation training (a non-credit bearing course).

- Basic econometrics
- Development policy
- Environmental economics
- Financial sector stability and growth
- Foreign direct investment and development
- International finance and money
- International macroeconomics and policy
- International trade
- Project planning, appraisal and implementation
- The economics of inequality and deprivation
- The IMF, World Bank and economic growth.
You will also write a dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words.
Career prospects
You will find this programme suitable if you intend pursuing careers in teaching and/or research in the general field of economic development or the specialist areas offered as optional subjects; if you wish to expand your knowledge of economic development as a government official; or if you work in this subject area in international agencies or in other organisations concerned with economic development.

Academic entry requirements
You should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent (eg, a GPA of 3.0 or above) in Economics or Finance, with at least three credit-bearing courses in economics, finance or development.
International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of foundation courses.

English language requirements
For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training):
- overall score 6.5
- no sub-test less than 6.0, with writing at 6.5
- or equivalent scores in another recognised qualification (see below)

Glasgow International College offers Foundation courses to upgrade your academic qualifications.
Visa requirements and proof of English language level
It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old. A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website. If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.
