Extending the work of the core course, topic courses in semester 2, of which the above are a selection, draw on the theoretical and thematic issues raised in the first semester, exploring them in greater depth. In that respect, any such course becomes a mini-research cluster in which students contribute both in showing command of their specific area of focus and an ability to interface with and complement contributions from those working in other periods and genres. Topic courses will be directed by a single member of staff in consultation with colleagues engaged in areas pertinent to individual student areas of interest.
Language
You may elect to take a Postgraduate language course at Beginner's, Non-Beginner Elementary, Intermediate or Advanced level from within SMLC for either one or two semesters, which is relevant to your prospective research focus (access the full list of SMLC Postgraduate Language Courses). You may also choose to learn Chinese Language 1 (Mandarin) in semester 1 and/or Chinese Language 2 (Mandarin) in semester 2. Or you may choose a language from outwith the School, such as Celtic, Estonian or Latvian. You also may choose a classical or medieval language, such as Latin, Old French or Old Icelandic.
