English Language & English Linguistics

Student testimonials

My first degree was in business, but a few years after graduating I felt the need to go back to University and learn something new entirely for my own enjoyment. I chose the MLitt in English Language and Linguistics (phonetics/sociolinguistics) as I'd always been interested in speech and how it varies from person to person, or between certain groups.  This couldn't have been a better choice -I enjoyed the teaching immensely, and was continually supported and encouraged by the academic staff to develop my thought. They strike a perfect balance between helping to shape the way you approach postgraduate research questions, whilst acknowledging that there is no 'one true way'. What started off as a 'hobby interest' soon became more than that, and I can now be found studying for my PhD at the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour...all thanks to the fab staff in English Language.  Andrew MacFarlane
